Alain Vanasse, MD, PhD

Full Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Sherbrooke, Dr. Alain Vanasse, MD, PhD, is known first and foremost for his expertise in health geomatics. His prime interests in this field are chronic disease, the health-care system, and primary health care, particularly as they relate to the access to care available to different populations, such rural and underprivileged populations and minorities.

After graduating in family medicine from the University of Sherbrooke in 1979, Dr. Vanasse spent nearly 20 years in rural practice in Saint-Fabien (Rimouski) before completing a PhD in public health at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) in 2000. Recruited by the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Sherbrooke as research professor in 1999, he earned the rank of full professor in the Faculty of Medicine there in 2008. Since 2001, he has been developing and directing the PRIMUS research group.
Starting in 1984, he spent more than a year as a development worker directing the Mutsamudu health center (Islamic Republic of Comoros) in an international health-care project under the auspices of Laval University. Following this exposure to population health, he served as medical consultant to the public health department in the Bas-St-Laurent on its regional program for preventing and controlling cardiovascular disease for nearly 15 years. In 2005–2006, he conducted a study on the physician workforce in the United States as visiting international scholar at Cecil G. Shep’s Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

As a FRSQ research fellow since 2002, he has obtained nearly $4 million in research grants as principal investigator or co-investigator, received primarily from national and provincial organizations with peer committees. Dr. Vanasse has many research interests, primarily in studying social and geographic health-care inequalities related to chronic diseases, more particularly those affecting rural and semirural populations. Under a grant from the GEOIDE network of centres of excellence, he developed the Système d’information Spatio-Temporel sur les Maladies Chroniques (SIST-MC) (spatiotemporal information system about chronic diseases). A founding member of Collaborative Research on Regional Medical Education (CRRME), he has conducted studies on the impact of delocalizing medical training programs on medical personnel, more specifically, with respect to family medicine in rural, northern, and isolated areas. Dr. Vanasse has helped develop, implement, and assess two projects on computerized medical records (Rimouski chip card, IRIS-Q/Cyber Santé).

From the beginning of his activities as researcher, clinician and educator, Professor Vanasse has acquired an expertise in the treatment and control of arterial hypertension as well as in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Pr Vanasse has completed many studies on the inaccurate measurement of blood pressure and the impact these inaccuracies have clinically and on the population. He has also participated in many publications as author, co-author and member of editorial committees.

Dr. Vanasse is also involved in many research groups and networks, in particular, four theme networks: GEOIDE (geomatics), CRRME (physician workforce), ACCORD, and RQRDC (chronic pain).
