The Centre for research and applications in remote sensing / Centre d'applications et de recherches en télédétection (CARTEL) is a research group of scientists, students and postdoctoral researchers whose mission is to advance scientific knowledge in remote sensing, as well as its application to observations of the environment.
CARTEL collaborates closely with the Département de géomatique appliquée (Department of Applied Geomatics) within the Faculté des lettres et sciences humaines and the Faculté de génie (Engineering Faculty) at the Université de Sherbrooke (Quebec, Canada).
A remote autonomous plankton observatory deployed in Lake Montjoie
The autonomous plankton observatory was deployed in the summer of 2012. This unique observatory will allow the observation of lake plankton as well as the variables controlling its growth.
Honorary doctorate degree awarded to Guy Rochon
During the University of Sherbrooke graduation ceremony for 2012, Guy Rochon was awarded an honorary doctorate degree.
Guy Rochon was recognized for his contributions to promoting the fields of information technologies, geomatics, and remote sensing.
Liviu Ivanescu and Manfred the Muskox in Eureka, Nunavut
Among the researchers from various disciplines who use the polar laboratory in Eureka, Liviu Ivanescu, a doctoral student at CARTEL (Norm O'Neill, thesis supervisor), has just finished another successful setup of their starphotometer in the high Arctic.
His curiosity peaked by the scientific activity at Eureka, home to Canada's northernmost research laboratory, Manfred the Muskox has shown particular interest in the starphotometer infrastructure...
Battle of the snow models
(in French only) Deux étudiants au doctorat en télédétection du Cartel viennent de soumettre, en même temps et dans le même journal, chacun un bel article sur la modélisation du rayonnement micro-onde de la neige, mais chacun avec son modèle!
Alexandre Roy(1) fait la promotion du modèle américain Dense Media Radiative Transfert Model (DMRT), version revue et codée à Grenoble (Ghislain Picard, Lab. de glaciologie). Benoit Montpetit(2), quand à lui, vente le modèle suisse Microwave Emission Model for Layered Snowpacks (MEMLS).
Alain Royer and Ghislain Picard return from a field trip in Antarctica after 2.5 months of the austral summer
(in French only) Dans le cadre d'un projet de recherche conjoint avec le Laboratoire de glaciologie et géophysique de l'environnement (LGGE) de Grenoble, professeur Alain Royer du CARTEL et Ghislain Picard ont réalisé une campagne de mesures en Antarctique pendant 2 mois 1/2 durant l'été austral, soit notre hiver à nous ici.
Le projet est financé par l'IPEV-France, le CRSNG-Canada, CNRS-France et une contribution financière de l'Université de Sherbrooke et du CARTEL.
